What Is Fuel Injection?
In simple terms, fuel injection occurs when a vehicle’s fuel, such as gasoline or diesel, is put under pressure and inserted into an internal combustion engine. This type of delivery systems began replacing carburetors in the 1980s. The basic difference between them is that carburetors depended on choke valves to regulate suction from air accelerating through a tube to draw fuel into the airstream. Fuel injection uses a process where gas is inserted under pressure through a tube that gets narrower until the pressure drops at the narrowest place. The reduced pressure sucks liquid from a chamber into the gas flow and projects it forward as a fine spray. This type of atomizer process is familiar in spraying perfumes or applying paint.

How Fuel Injection Works
The amount of fuel needed and its delivery into the engine are determined by electronic fuel metering. This “engine load” is then used to calculate the correct amount of fuel needed. There are other sensors in the system that monitor coolant temperature, crankshaft position and oxygen so that efficiency of fuel usage can be well-regulated.
Fuel moves from the tank along the fuel lines and is pressurized by the fuel pump where a fuel pressure regulator maintains the correct pressure. The fuel is divided to correspond to the number of cylinders and the fuel injector then opens and sprays the pressurized gas into the engine. The length of time it is open determines the amount of fuel dispensed.
