Now that the evenings are a little cooler and the days are less humid, we tend to get excited that the kids are back in school and involved in various activities, those old college football rivalries and tailgate parties are in full force, and all the holidays with their planning and get-togethers are just ahead. It’s easy to get distracted by all the events that autumn ushers in, but don’t let your car’s radiator service get lost in the shuffle.
As you probably know, a radiator’s job is to keep your car engine cool. You may think, now that the weather is cooler your radiator won’t have to work so hard, but, that’s not true! A working engine generates a lot of heat just doing what it’s supposed to do, no matter what the outside temperatures are or what season it is. That’s why we put some type of coolant into the system to attract that heat and take it away from the engine. Where does the heated coolant go? It goes to the radiator, where the liquid is cooled down and can recirculate to do its job all over again.
In addition to the fan that blows air to help lower the coolant’s temperature, your vehicle’s radiator and cooling system is made up of aluminum and/or plastic tanks and tubes. After a while, those tanks or tubes will crack and start leaking or they will become clogged. If either of these things happens, and the situation isn’t discovered and serviced, your engine won’t get enough coolant which will cause extreme heat to build up until it does serious damage to the engine. Regular maintenance is an inexpensive way to keep the radiator and cooling system in good condition and prevent engine damage, which would become an expensive problem!
Your owner’s manual will clearly state a preferred service schedule for your particular vehicle. You should make certain to follow that maintenance guide to keep your engine running as long and as efficiently as possible. In addition to that, call us for service immediately if your car is overheating or you notice a red, yellow or green liquid leaking out.
