At Xpress Lube in Kernersville, we want to be your trusted partner when it comes to keeping your vehicle running smoothly. With that in mind, we’re providing this reminder to you, our valued customers and potential customers, about why proper fuel injection service is so important.
What Is Fuel Injection?
In simple terms, fuel injection occurs when a vehicle’s fuel, such as gasoline or diesel, is put under pressure and inserted into an internal combustion engine. This type of delivery systems began replacing carburetors in the 1980s. The basic difference between them is that carburetors depended on choke valves to regulate suction from air accelerating through a tube to draw fuel into the airstream. Fuel injection uses a process where gas is inserted under pressure through a tube that gets narrower until the pressure drops at the narrowest place. The reduced pressure sucks liquid from a chamber into the gas flow and projects it forward as a fine spray. This type of atomizer process is familiar in spraying perfumes or applying paint.
Good For Driving
Fuel-injected engines, when serviced appropriately, deliver smoother rides than the old-fashioned carburetors with more dependable engine response for drivers. They start easier and are more reliable through temperature extremes, too. And, they offer the added benefit of going longer between maintenance services and giving better overall fuel efficiency.
Better For The Environment
In addition to driving benefits, professionally-serviced fuel injection offers improved distribution, which means less fuel is needed to maintain operating power. This efficiency leads to savings at the pump as well as less demand for the manufacture of petroleum-based gasoline products. In addition, a well-serviced, more accurate fuel distribution system reduces harmful emissions and produces cleaner exhaust into the air, which lengthens the life of a vehicle’s catalytic converter.
How Fuel Injection Works
The amount of fuel needed and its delivery into the engine are determined by electronic fuel metering. Basically, this entails use of a mass airflow sensor to judge the amount of air being taken in and communicate that to the engine control unit. This “engine load” is then used to calculate the correct amount of fuel needed. There are other sensors in the system that monitor coolant temperature, crankshaft position and oxygen so that efficiency of fuel usage can be well-regulated.
Fuel moves from the tank along the fuel lines and is pressurized by the fuel pump where a fuel pressure regulator maintains the correct pressure. The fuel is divided to correspond to the number of cylinders and the fuel injector then opens and sprays the pressurized gas into the engine. The length of time it is open determines the amount of fuel dispensed.
Quality Results with Quality Service
There are many other working parts and system variations that your professional service technician must consider in order to keep your vehicle in top condition. Considerations include whether your vehicle is gas-powered or diesel and if it uses single-point, continuous or multiport injection, for example. A professionally-trained service person will also be aware of dangers caused by high fuel pressures, which can remain in fuel lines and must be relieved appropriately.
At Xpress Lube, we know your vehicle and we know the maintenance services it needs. We have years of experience with fuel injection services and we will give your vehicle the professional attention it deserves. If your engine has been less responsive or if it has been using more fuel than usual, let us look it over for you.
