If you have a list of chores that includes Winterize Car, we are here to help! There are several items that can easily be done at the beginning of the cold weather season to keep your vehicle running smoothly and safely. Frigid temperatures, snow, ice and hazardous driving conditions can all become a challenge for drivers. Depending upon where you live, some areas may require more substantial preparation than others.
At Havoline Xpress Lube in Kernersville, NC, we pride ourselves in keeping our customers on the road in all kinds of weather and ensuring that they are driving a safe vehicle. Of course, we also like to keep them informed as to how they should prepare for inclement weather.
Driving Conditions in the Piedmont Triad Area of NC
Although we experience quite mild weather year-round, we also need to prepare for the occasional snow or ice storm. Our temperatures vary greatly during the winter, and even during a 24-hour period! At times, a heavy rain during the afternoon can quickly cause icy conditions on the roads when temperatures drop during the night. Winterizing your car doesn’t have to be a major problem…taking some minor preventive measures may be enough to ensure that you have no problems on the road.
Winterize Car – A Checklist
There are several measures that you can take in order to prevent cold weather problems with your car and to stay safe on the road. Here, we will list some important winterize car items to take care of before the weather becomes an issue!
Check those tires!
When you bring your car in for an oil change or maintenance, we always check to be sure that you have a good tread remaining on your tires. This is important at any time of the year, but especially during the winter. If there is snow on the ground, your vehicle needs to be able to get a grip onto the roadway in order not to turn the road into a slip-and-slide surface! Tire pressure is also important, since temperature can affect the pressure and having optimal pressure in your tires will ensure the best gas mileage and even tire wear. Ask us about nitrogen in your tires instead of inflating with air!
Windshield wipers need to do their job!
If you are caught in a sudden snowfall or must drive during a snowstorm, your wipers may be one of the most important pieces of equipment on your vehicle. Keeping the windshield clear is imperative to driving safely when snow is falling. You want to ensure that snow doesn’t block your view, since your field of vision is critical to keeping your car on the road and to seeing the location of cars around you. Ask us to replace any worn wipers before they cause a problem.
Fluids are important, too!
Your antifreeze, oil, windshield washer fluid and brake fluid all play a critical role in keeping your car operating smoothly in all types of weather. We check your fluids during your oil change to ensure your safety.
Salt on the road is good for driving, but not for your paint job!
Keep in mind that the salt that is used to prevent icy road conditions is also damaging to the finishes on your car. As soon as possible after driving on salted roads, bring your car in to our state-of-the-art car wash. Ours is the latest in environmentally-friendly, gentle-but-thorough car wash equipment. Best of all, we offer discounted packages that will provide a custom solution to your particular driving needs. In the winter, you may decide to opt for an unlimited amount of visits, so that you can bring your car in as often as you like, without paying regular price for each visit. Prevent salt damage before it happens!
Another idea…during these times when everyone is trying to cut costs, give a prepaid card as a Christmas or birthday gift!
Keep your gas tank at least half-full!
You don’t want to have to look for a gas station in the middle of a snowstorm. Keeping some gas in your tank means that you won’t be desperate to stop for gas. It isn’t likely, despite common beliefs, that your gas will freeze; however, a low level of gas during cold weather could cause problems with your fuel tank, etc.
Check your safety kit!
Of course, it is important to have a safety kit in your car all year-round, in case of emergencies. It is especially critical to have during the winter months. During bad weather, you don’t want to be stuck on the road with a problem, when you could easily be carrying the solution in your trunk! Some of the main items you need to have in the winter are:
- Jumper cables
- Ice scraper
- Flares
- Non-perishable food and beverages
- Flashlight
- Blankets
- Cell phone charger
