Why Oil Changes are Important
You might be tempted to ignore the fact that you need an oil change. In fact, you might even be telling yourself, “A few more weeks won’t hurt.” However, putting off an oil change can cause irreversible engine damage. Depending on how much you drive, a few weeks could put a lot of strain on your vehicle.
Oil helps to keep your engine running smoothly. This lubrication prevents wear and friction as the pieces of your engine move. No matter what brand or type of oil you use, it breaks down over time. As the oil breaks down, it creates sludge. Additionally, dirt from driving can work its way into your oil. While your oil filter will work to prevent dirt from affecting your engine, this dirt can expedite oil breakdown. Over time, your engine filter also gets dirty and can clog.
What does this all mean?
Well, simply put, you are putting your engine at risk. It has to work harder, parts have more wear and tear, and it could overheat. If you go too long without an oil change, your engine will seize up completely. So yes, you can put off that oil change for a few more miles, but don’t wait too long. If you do, you could find yourself stranded along the road with a blown engine.
Most people need an oil change every 3,000-7,500 miles, depending on the type of oil you use. Your owner’s manual is a good place to start. This is based on an average driver. If you only drive your vehicle occasionally, you should have your oil changed sooner. Again, this depends on the type of oil you use and your manufacturer recommendations. However, we recommend changing your oil at least every 4-6 months, even if you don’t hit that 3,000-mile mark. If you aren’t sure whether or not you need an oil change, give us a call. We are happy to make a recommendation about when to change your oil. Our ASE-certified mechanics will take your driving habits, weather, and car mileage into consideration when determining the best oil change interval for you.
Your Oil Change Package Options
When you need an oil change, you have a few different options. With all oil changes, we do a complimentary fluid check and vacuum your vehicle. Additionally, our oil changes include a new oil filter. Here are your oil options:
Conventional Oil:
- Most car owners choose conventional oil. This oil is the most budget-friendly option. However, it does not work quite as well as other oil options. Also, conventional oil needs to be changed more often. Essentially, conventional oil will get the job done, but there are better options if your budget allows.
Synthetic Oil:
- This type of oil is chemically the same as conventional oil. However, because it is more highly-refined, it has increased lubricating qualities. We recommend synthetic oil for most car owners. You don’t have to change synthetic oil as often.
Synthetic Blends:
- Blends are the “Goldilocks” oil options. As the name implies, they are a combination of synthetic and conventional oils. They offer better lubricating quality than conventional oil, but are less expensive than synthetics.
High-Mileage Oil:
- Again, as the name implies, high-mileage oil is specially formulated for older cars. Your engine has more wear and tear when it is older. High-mileage oil is designed to protect it, which can help increase the lifespan of your engine.
In all cases, we use Havoline brand oil. This oil is a trusted brand in the automotive industry and has been around for over 100 years. We use Havoline oil in our own cars and feel completely confident in recommending it to our customers. If your mechanic wouldn’t use it, you shouldn’t either.
Are you unsure about your oil options? Our team of professionals can look at your car and driving habits to make a recommendation. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
Once you know what kind of oil you want, you’ll also need to choose a viscosity or weight. The numbers on the oil container indicate the weight. For example, you might see oil labeled 10W-40 or 5W-30. Luckily, this decision is much easier: you should use what your vehicle manufacturer recommends.
The weight of the oil indicates how well the oil flows in low and high temperatures. Unless you are driving in extreme conditions, like winters in Alaska, go with your manufacturer’s recommendation. Whatever they recommend is what will work best in your car. If you aren’t sure, you can find this information in your manual. No manual? No problem! We can look up this information for you in order to find the best oil for your vehicle.
Adding Services to an Express Oil Change Near Me
If you are an average driver, you’ll need to change your oil a few times per year in most cases. During your oil change, we can also perform other basic maintenance services. Kill two birds with one stone and keep your car in tip-top shape. Here are some of the other services you can schedule at the same time as your oil change:
North Carolina State Inspection
An inspection is required annually in North Carolina. This inspection checks basic car functions such as lights and tires, in order to ensure your car is safe. Without an inspection, you can’t legally drive your car. Here in North Carolina, many counties also require an additional emissions inspection. You can click here to see if your county requires an emissions inspection in addition to the safety inspection.
Brakes are one of the most important safety features of your car. We can do a free brake inspection to look at the brake pads, shoes, rotors, and fluids. If you do need brake service, our packages include everything you need to get back on the road. We’ll replace pads/shoes, resurface your rotors, flush the system, replace brake fluid, and more. Before we start, we’ll inspect your system and give you a full quote. We never want our customers to get a surprise bill at the end of service.
Transmission Fluid and Filter Change
Your transmission transfers power from the engine to the drive axle. Without a working transmission, your car won’t move. At Kernersville Auto Center, our team of mechanics is certified and trained to work on transmissions. We can diagnose and fix any transmission problem. We’ll check the fluid levels and change if needed. Learn more about our transmission services here.
Other Maintenance Services
If you need maintenance done on your vehicle, we can help. Our ASE-certified technicians can run a full diagnostic to figure out any problem. We have experience with:
- Rotating your tires to encourage even wear
- Figuring out why your check engine light is on
- Tuning up an engine for better performance and fuel economy
- Replacing batteries
- Fixing issues with your alternator
- Recycling and replacing your antifreeze
- And more!
These are all services you can add on to an oil change. We’re happy to look at any vehicle-related issue. While you are here, you can also get a full car wash. Our Xpress Turbo Wash service has four package options. Some offer unlimited visits during a month so that your vehicle will never be covered with pollen or acid rain marks! Therefore, your car won’t just run like new, it will also look like new!
