NC Car Inspection Requirements for Emissions Testing
The most common inspection question we get is this: Do I need to pass an emissions test? The answer is maybe! It depends on the county in NC. In 22 counties in North Carolina, cars must pass an emissions test. This includes Forsyth, where our auto service center is located. You can find a full list of counties requiring an emissions inspection here.
In some cases, certain vehicles may not need to pass an emissions inspection in North Carolina. If your car is older than 1995, diesel-operated, or registered as a farm vehicle, it will not require an emissions inspection. In addition, some newer low-mileage vehicles may not need to pass the test. At our auto center, a knowledgeable representative can tell you more about your options.
Car Safety Inspections in North Carolina
Regardless of whether or not you need to pass an emissions test, all vehicles need to pass the safety inspection. You must take your car for this inspection annually. Before you can register your car, you need to pass the inspection.
During your inspection, one of our mechanics will go down a checklist to ensure your vehicle is operating properly. We’ll look at headlights, turn signals, brakes, tires, steering, windshield wipers, and windows. If they are in good working order, you will pass. Although you have until the due date to get the inspection done, you can schedule it for up to 90 days earlier. So, you have three months to complete the safety inspection.
